Mushaway Peak is a small but prominent butte in West Texas, southeast of Gail in Borden County, long recognized as a landmark in the Rolling Plains. Rising 2,851 feet above sea level, its summit stands at about the same elevation as the nearby Llano Estacado. The peak is an erosional remnant of a formerly broader Llano Estacado surface, preserved by a resistant cap while surrounding land was gradually worn away by headward erosion along Grape Creek and Bull Creek. Known by several names over time, including Cordova Peak and Old Baldy, it received its official present name in 1973 and remains a visible trace of the region’s older geologic landscape.
