U.S. Military Road #11 was constructed by soldiers of Fort Jesup in 1827-1828 as an extension of the Old San Antonio Trace. Grand Ecore had supplanted Natchitoches as a river port as early as 1836. Fortifications dating to 1861-1865 stood nearby, and Fort Selden, established in 1822, lay two miles away.
