The University of Illinois Arboretum is a 160-acre botanical garden on the Urbana campus that blends display gardens with academic, recreational, and athletic uses. Built on former south campus farmlands, it remains under development while open daily without charge. Its notable features include the Welcome Garden, Hartley Garden, the themed Idea Garden, and Japan House with its surrounding tea, Zen, and cherry tree gardens. Other areas include the Frank W. Kari Walkway around the ponds, a Hosta Garden, and native Illinois prairie plantings. Since 2003, the arboretum has also served as the home course for the university’s men’s and women’s cross country teams.
