Last Chance Canyon in the El Paso Mountains near Johannesburg, California, is an archaeological and historic landscape extending from Saltdale to Black Mountain and including part of Red Rock Canyon State Park. It preserves evidence from widely different periods of human use, including pictographs, village areas, rock shelters, mills, quarries, and gold mining camps. This concentration of cultural material gives the canyon significance as both a record of much older human activity and of the mining era. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 5, 1972, and is now owned by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and open to recreation.
