On May 17, 1864, Butterfield's 3d division of the 20th Army Corps marched this way from Field’s Mill on the Coosawattee River, en route to Kingston, and camped at the Smith farm 2 1/2 miles north of Mosteller’s Mills. On May 18, Schofield's 23d Army Corps, marching from Field’s, reached the vicinity at 2 A.M. Cox's 3d division camped at this crossroads until 5 A.M. and, via Sonora, moved to Mosteller’s. Hovey’s 1st and Judah’s 2d divisions camped at Big Spring, at the other end of Dew’s Lake, and by evening reached Mosteller’s. These troops formed the left flank of Federal forces en route to the Etowah River.
