Gilbert and Helen Duran married in 1958 and raised four children, Robert, Cella, Julianne, and Michelle, and their family includes eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Gilbert moved to Roseville in 1956 to teach in the Roseville City School District and continued there for over 30 years. He later served two terms on the Roseville City Council from 1972 to 1978, spent twelve years as a board member for the Roseville City School District, and also worked as a substitute teacher in neighboring school districts during that time. With Harold "Bizz" Johnson, he started an anti-poverty program in Roseville that spread to Lincoln, Auburn, and Colfax and also focused on the English language and citizenship. Gilbert, an avid runner, and Helen formed and coached the Roseville Gazelles, a local youth sports team recognized for multiple state and national victories. He later spent his free time painting, traveling, and hosting taco parties. Helen Duran also contributed to numerous public service groups. She taught in the Roseville City School District for over 30 years and, after retirement, served six years on the Roseville City School District Board. She helped start the Roseville Junior Women's Club, was a longtime member of the District Teachers Association and Negotiation Team, and belonged to the Placer County Retired Teacher's Club, which aided scholarships for high school students and continues to offer scholarships in her name after her passing in 2008. Motherhood and teaching were said to be Helen's cornerstone. For both Gilbert and Helen, working in a profession that benefited youth in the community was a passion and a joy, and their lifelong service was dedicated to improving young people's quality of life.
