This spot was once buried beneath hundreds of feet of moving ice. The bedrock here was polished by sediment-laden water on the underside of the glacier, and as the ice flowed across the rock, debris frozen into it cut a pattern of scratch marks. Similar glacial features are visible along the trail across the road, showing the glacier's passage through this area. The Cowlitz Glacier that once covered this place has retreated three miles up canyon.
