A depot originally built here in 1904 by the Wadley and Mt. Vernon Railroad remained until its merger with the larger G and F Railroad in 1907. Douglas became the line’s central hub when railyards were constructed north of town in 1909. Through the G and F, travelers could go north to Augusta, Georgia, and south to Madison, Florida, with connections from those points to almost any city in the United States. Cattle, tobacco, cotton, and naval store products were exported from Douglas on G and F cars, and the company was a major employer for many years. Norfolk Southern service began during the 1960s and was the first major railway to locate in Douglas. It took over the older G and F line, depot, and yards, continued operating until the late 1980s, and deeded the depot to the City of Douglas to develop a local history museum, a project made possible by strong commitment from city officials and Transportation Enhancement Act funding.
