Fort Chanyaska stood 112 rods west of this boulder. It was built during the Sioux Indian uprising of 1862-65 by a platoon under the command of 1st. Lt. George Paton of Co. D, 9th Minn. Infantry, which was commanded by Captain Asgrim K. Skaro and stationed at Fort Fairmount.
