Hospital Point Range Front Light in Beverly, Massachusetts, has guided vessels toward Salem Harbor since its station was established in 1871 and the light first shone in 1872. Marking the deep-water channel to Beverly, Salem, and Marblehead, it works with a second light placed in Beverly’s First Baptist Church steeple in 1927 to help mariners keep to the channel and avoid the rocky shore. The forty-five-foot white brick tower stands on a site also linked to an earlier smallpox hospital and a Revolutionary War fort. Automated in 1947, it remains an active United States Coast Guard aid to navigation and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
