On April 19, 1775, 265 Woburn Patriots led by Major Loammi Baldwin answered the call to arms. Marching along the route now known as Battle Road, they heard “a great firing” of muskets on Lexington Green, hurried on to Lexington to join the pursuit of the British to Concord, and later engaged the Regulars with punishing fire at Bloody Angle. A portion of this historic road, originally called Old Lexington Road, remains preserved alongside conservation land much as it was in the 18th century, bordered with ancient stone walls. The journey begun by Woburn’s militia men on this road was part of Woburn's participation in the Revolutionary War and ended eight long years later with the founding of the United States of America.
