Pilot Knob, a mountain in Missouri’s Arcadia Valley between Ironton and Pilot Knob, has long shaped the region through its height, iron ore, and strategic setting. Its ancient rock formation and prominent summit made it a landmark for early travelers, including people associated with Hernando de Soto’s expedition, while Algonquian and later Cherokee people also passed through or lived nearby. In the nineteenth century, rail access tied the mountain closely to the iron industry and mining reshaped its upper slopes. During the Civil War, Fort Davidson stood near its base and battle filled the valley below. Today its summit is protected as a wildlife refuge important to endangered Indiana bats.
