On August 6, 1861, the Southern army entered this valley on the Wire Road and camped for more than a mile along both sides of the creek near the log home of William Edwards, where Confederate General Sterling Price established his headquarters. Shortly after 5 A.M. on August 10, while Generals Price and Ben McCulloch were eating breakfast, the Union Army attacked, and from here the Confederate generals looked toward Bloody Hill and saw their soldiers fleeing and the flash of Union cannon. Orders were shouted at once, the Southerners formed a line of battle to attack the Federals on the hill, and the Battle of Wilson's Creek began. For the next six hours, shells burst overhead, troops rushed up and down the road, and gunfire and shouts filled the air. The original cabin that stood here during the battle no longer survives. The cabin now at this site was built about three miles away in 1869 by William Edwards, the same man who built the first cabin here, and the National Park Service moved it here in 1985 to help recreate the historic setting of Price's headquarters.
