The Burton Rotary Pavilion grew from the dream of Judge Richard L. Hughes during his term as Burton Rotary president from July 1, 1998, to June 30, 1999. It became a reality through the work of fellow Rotarians and supporters, including Auldin Nelson, who created the architectural design; John Matonich, who developed the site plan; Charles H. Smiley, mayor of the City of Burton, who was instrumental in obtaining permission to build on city property; Robert Centilli, a builder and Burton city councilman, who volunteered his time and skills; and Pete Bomireto of Custom Components, a Vietnam veteran, who donated the trusses. On Memorial Day, May 31, 1999, the Burton Rotary Club dedicated the pavilion to all United States veterans, who in their country's hour of need have given of themselves, with some making the ultimate sacrifice, helping prove that America is the Home of the Brave and ensuring that it remains the Land of the Free.
