The New York State Museum in Albany is a major institution of natural history, anthropology, and history, operated by the State Education Department’s Office of Cultural Education and regarded as the oldest and largest state museum in the United States. Founded in 1836 as the New York State Geological and Natural History Survey to document mineral wealth, it was reorganized in 1870 and moved in 1976 to the Cultural Education Center beside the Empire State Plaza. Its vast collections and exhibits trace New York’s cultural, natural, and geological development, while its research programs support scholarship in fields including paleontology, archaeology, genetics, and wildlife science.
