Cherrystone Bar Light stood at the entrance to Cape Charles harbor in Virginia as part of the lower Chesapeake Bay system that guided maritime traffic. Built shortly before the Civil War, it was extinguished by Confederate forces during the war and resumed service in 1862 under Union control. Its most distinctive chapter came after the war: in 1919 a skeleton tower on a small caisson replaced the original lighthouse, and in 1920 the old house was moved by barge to a new foundation to replace the destroyed Choptank River Light. This made it the Chesapeake Bay’s only relocated and reused lighthouse. The moved structure was dismantled in 1964, but the replacement light still operates at Cherrystone Bar.
