A Confederate prison camp for Union prisoners of war stood here. Established about November 18, 1864, it held more than five thousand prisoners until the first week of January, 1865. The prisoners were brought from camps at Millen and probably Andersonville to avoid the possibility of liberation by Sherman's troops as they moved southward. At one time the camp was under the command of Colonel H. Forno. Other prisoners from Millen were transferred to camps at Savannah and Florence.
