On this corner stood the original Masonic Lodge in the three-story Chambers and Dunn building, which burned to the ground in the fire of September 27, 1886, becoming the first large frame building to fall to the flames. In 1925, the First National Bank erected DeLand’s first “Skyscraper” on the site. The collapse of the Florida Land Boom forced the bank to close on July 11, 1929, and Barnett Bank took over the property on October 24, 1929, only five days before the Great Stock Market Crass. During the Depression, a daredevil known only as the “Human Fly” occasionally scaled the walls, seeking contributions from onlookers.
