Early on October 14, 1872, bank robbers entered this building, roused the cashier, and forced him to open the safe. After binding and gagging all occupants, they left with half a million dollars worth of cash, securities, and jewelry. Once they were caught, tried, and acquitted, some of the booty was recovered by compromise. The jurors then enjoyed a banquet by the kindness of the liberated leader.
