Before the Revolutionary War, burial sites were unprotected, reused, unmarked, frequently disturbed, and also used for other purposes such as agriculture. In the 1790s, Americans reconsidered how and where the dead were buried. This burying ground reflects that period of change, including unmarked graves and a marked family burying area. Pieter Bronck, the original settler on this site, and his wife were buried in Albany in a much moved and now lost burying ground. Pieter's son and some of his grandchildren may have been buried here in unmarked graves side by side with the graves of family slaves and their freeborn descendents. The known family burials here are those of Judge Leonard Bronk, the fifth-generation owner of this site, his first wife, one of his sons, and a few of his grandchildren. Each of these burials is marked with both a headstone and footstone. The last three family owners were buried in the Coxsackie Village Burying Ground, owned and controlled by shareholders, including the Bronks.
