Fish Slough is a protected wetland oasis in eastern California on the west side of Chalfant Valley, north of Bishop in northern Owens Valley. Spanning 36,000 acres, it preserves a slough within an otherwise arid volcanic tableland. Its position between the Mojave Desert and the Great Basin gives it unusual biological diversity, including wetlands, alkali meadows, and uplands. The area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and recognized for both its distinctive natural character and habitat value. It became a National Natural Landmark in 1975 and was formally designated an Area of Critical Environmental Concern in 1982.
