At New-Gate Prison's nail shop, incarcerated men were forced to make wrought iron nails as prison labor under harsh conditions. Much of the surviving record of life at New-Gate comes from official reports and tourist accounts written by people in authority, while the voices of imprisoned people were seldom documented. Historical accounts recall men chained by iron collars at the forges or fastened in pairs to wheelbarrows, and prisoners who failed to meet required nail-production quotas could be punished with five to ten stripes. The Metal Man, a sculpture created by Danny Killion, stresses the humanity of incarcerated people by showing deep emotion in a machine-like figure making nails and looking beyond the prison walls. The work also draws on perspectives shaped by modern incarceration and seeks to encourage reflection on incarceration in the past, present, and future.
