Cincinnatus Heiner "Joaquin" Miller, known in Oregon as America's "Poet of the Sierras," lived from 1848 to 1852 in Newcastle Township of Fulton County. His family's home and the rude schoolhouse where he attended classes taught by his father, Hulings, stood one mile north and one-tenth mile east of here. Miller is best known for his poem "Columbus," and many of his works recall his boyhood in Fulton County. He died in 1913.
