Noquebay lies wrecked in Lake Superior’s Chequamegon Bay off Stockton Island. Built in 1872 as a wooden schooner and later converted into a towable barge for the lumber trade, it reflected a broader shift in Great Lakes shipping as steam power replaced long-distance sailing towage. In 1905, while owned by T. H. Madden’s fleet, Noquebay was loaded in Ashland, Wisconsin, with 600,000 board-feet of hemlock lumber for Buffalo, New York. Soon after departing near Bayfield with Lizzie Madden and Mautenee, fire broke out aboard and could not be controlled. The crew escaped safely, and the wreck is now an archaeological site listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
