Centre Presbyterian Church was organized in 1765 and first met at Osborne's Meeting House. Its mission stood centrally among Sugar Creek, Hopewell, Fourth Creek (Statesville First), Poplar Tent, and Thyatira, giving the congregation the name Centre. Known as the “mother of churches,” it helped start the missions of Prospect, Bethel, Davidson College Church, Shearer, and Mooresville First. The congregation had no ordained pastor before 1777. Its original building was destroyed by fire in 1774, after which a 50 by 80 foot log church was erected with its length parallel to the road, doors on the side next to the road and at the ends, and the pulpit opposite the road beneath a sounding board. After 80 years, that building was torn down and replaced by the present structure in 1854, and the church building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
