Fort Necessity National Battlefield preserves the Pennsylvania site where George Washington, then a young colonial officer, surrendered to French and Native forces on July 3, 1754, in an early clash of the French and Indian War. At Great Meadows, Washington had strengthened a weak position with a crude stockaded fort built to protect supplies while advancing a road toward the Monongahela. Facing an untenable situation, he accepted surrender terms and withdrew, after which the French burned the fort. The landscape also preserves later research, restoration, and related sites tied to Braddock’s grave, Jumonville Glen, and Mount Washington Tavern, placing the defeat within a wider imperial conflict.
