Edgar Peak, in California’s eastern Mojave Desert, is the 7,162-foot high point of the Providence Mountains, the Providence Mountains State Recreation Area, and a prominent summit within Mojave National Preserve. Rising sharply above the surrounding desert, it anchors drainage toward Kelso Wash on the west and Clipper Valley on the east. The mountain spans hot desert lowlands and a colder summit climate where winter snow sometimes falls briefly. It is also geologically important: its summit is Jurassic Fountain Peak Rhyolite, about 164 million years old, intruding older sedimentary formations. The name has long been recognized officially, and older sources also called it Mount Edgar.
