Colt Creek State Park is a 5,067-acre protected landscape in Central Florida within the Green Swamp Wilderness Area, where flatwoods, wetlands, hardwood hammocks, pasture, and surface limestone shape an important aquifer recharge area feeding four major rivers. The land preserves traces of earlier uses, from John Keen’s pre-1940 pine resin operation, visible in scarred cat-face trees and Herty pots, to the Overstreet family’s cattle, timber, hunting, and limestone work after 1940, including the small Deadhead Lodge built in the 1960s. Since public acquisition in 2006 and opening in 2007, it has grown into a recreation area with trails, lakes, campgrounds, notable wildlife, and recognized birding habitat.
