Men from the State of Maine served in Major General Philip Sheridan's Army of the Shenandoah at the Third Battle of Winchester on September 19, 1864. In the Sixth Army Corps, Brigadier General George W. Getty's Division included Brigadier General Daniel D. Bidwell's Brigade with the 7th Maine Infantry and the Maine Light Artillery 5th Battery (E). John Mead Gould of the 29th Maine Infantry declared, "We are glad that we could suffer for our Country's good: We glory in our strength and in all that is creditable to a soldier but war we hate: It shall never exist again if we can prevent it." In the Nineteenth Army Corps, Brigadier General William Dwight's Division included Brevet Brigadier General George L. Beal's Brigade with the 29th Maine Infantry, and Brigadier General Cuvier Grover's Division included Brigadier General Henry Birge's Brigade with the 12th Maine Infantry, 14th Maine Infantry, and Maine Light Artillery, 1st Battery (A).
