Appert Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a protected wetland in Emmons County, North Dakota, managed as one of five easement refuges under Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Established during the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s, it was created to preserve stable water habitat as waterfowl populations declined and the need for protected habitat grew. Though privately owned, the land is protected by refuge easement rights for flooding and is closed to hunting. Its wooded prairie wetland, unusual in an otherwise agricultural landscape, supports migrating and nesting birds including ducks, teal, wigeon, gadwalls, pintails, and many woodland songbirds.
