Waukegan Harbor Light stands at the end of Government Pier at the foot of Madison Street in Waukegan, Illinois, where it has served Lake Michigan navigation since 1889. In the early twentieth century, the lighthouse was moved to its present position when the pier was extended, and a fog signal building was added to meet the needs of a busy harbor facing changing lake weather. A major fire in 1967 destroyed much of the surrounding structure, including the light and fog signal, but the cast-iron tower survived. After later removals, the lighthouse regained a simpler appearance and remains maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard.
