Henry Bourne Joy, president of the Packard Motor Car Company and first president of the Lincoln Highway Association, helped establish the Lincoln Highway in 1913 as the nation’s first transcontinental automobile route. The coast-to-coast highway was a private enterprise managed by the Lincoln Highway Association and financed through memberships and donations from automobile and road building industries. Joy called his effort to establish it “The greatest thing I ever did,” and said, “That there should be a Lincoln Highway across the country is the important thing.” The old Lincoln Highway occupied the roadbed just north of this site, now a service road for I-80. Joy camped near here in 1916 and, after seeing what he called the most beautiful sunset he had ever witnessed, told his companions he would like to be buried in this wild, wide-open western landscape. After his death in 1936, his family buried him closer to home but in 1938 placed an impressive memorial here to honor his life. In 2001, the monument was moved to the I-80 Summit Rest Area east of Laramie to protect it from increasing vandalism, and the new location remains within sight of the highest point on the three thousand five hundred-mile coast-to-coast route.
