Octave Chanute’s 1891 book "Progress in Flying Machines" made him the world’s first aviation historian and, more importantly, let experimenters learn from earlier work instead of wasting time through repetition. His 1896 biplane design was so successful that it underwent few changes during the next 50 years and served as a model for the "Wright Flyer" at Kitty Hawk, N.C.
