During the Philadelphia Campaign, British forces sailed from New York with Philadelphia as their destination and landed seventeen thousand troops near Elkton, Maryland. On September 3, 1777, colonial sharpshooters engaged the British in a delaying action at the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge during troop maneuvers in Delaware and Maryland between August 25 and September 10, 1777.
