Wetlands once covered much of Baltimore's shoreline, but as Baltimore grew into a thriving port and industrial center, people viewed them as obstacles to development and causes of disease, leaving few of these aquatic habitats today. Since the 1970s, Marylanders have increased efforts to protect and restore the state's wetlands. After completion of the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel in 1985, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers created the Fort McHenry Wetland, which is maintained and monitored by a team of state and federal agencies and nonprofit organizations and is home to hundreds of plant and animal species.
