During the last years of French control, Fort de Chartres in the Illinois Country had fifteen-foot walls enclosing an open parade ground and several buildings, including barracks for troops, housing for officers, a chapel, a bakery, a storehouse, and a powder magazine for ammunition. Its main gate opened onto the Mississippi River, while its back gate faced the bluffs.
