Mount Brown is an 8,569-foot peak in Glacier National Park’s Lewis Range, rising above the Lake McDonald area in northwestern Montana. Its name has an uncertain origin: one account says a Chicago camping and fishing party named it in 1894 for William Brown after two men climbed the peak, while a 1929 U.S. Geographic Board decision said the name was already in local use and probably honored Montana pioneer Louis Brown. The mountain is also closely tied to the historic Mount Brown Fire Lookout, built in 1928 on its southwestern slopes below the summit and later listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the park’s early fire-detection system.
