Fort Steuben stood at the northern end of the Seven Ranges in the Northwest Territory, where it was built in 1786 to protect federal surveyors entering the contested Ohio Country and to discourage squatters. Created under Major John Francis Hamtramck with troops from the First American Regiment, it supported land surveys authorized after the Land Ordinance of 1785, following earlier delays caused by attacks that alarmed Thomas Hutchins and his party. Named for Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben in 1787, the fort was a square stockaded post with corner blockhouses, but its military use was brief. Evacuated that same year and destroyed by fire in 1790, its site later became Steubenville.
