James Fenimore Cooper wrote that if anything from his romances was to outlive him, it would be the series of The Leather-Stocking Tales. The Last of the Mohicans was published in Philadelphia in 1826, with new American editions in 1827, 1835, 1849, and 1850. In England it was published in 1826 and reprinted in 1831 and later. The novel was quickly translated into French in 1826, German in 1826, Danish in 1827, Swedish in 1828, Italian in 1829, Norwegian in 1830, Spanish in 1832, and Portuguese in 1838, and it can be read today in over 30 languages.
