On Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima, on 20 February 1945, six servicemen were identified with the words "Uncommon Valor Was A Common Virtue": PFC Ira Hayes, USMCR, of Sacaton, Arizona; PFC Franklin R. Sousley, USMCR, of Flemingsburg, Kentucky, who was killed in action on 21 March 1945; Sgt. Michael Strank, USMC, of Conemaugh, Pennsylvania, who was killed in action on 1 March 1945; PHM2/C John H Bradley, USN, a corpsman from Antigo, Wisconsin; PFC Rene Gagnon, USMCR, of Manchester, New Hampshire; and CPL Harlon H Block, USMC, of Yorktown, Texas, who was killed in action on 1 March 1945. Their training links included MCRD San Diago, MCRD Parris Island, and Recruit Training at Farragut, Idaho.
