Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument near Hagerman, Idaho, preserves 4,351 acres of Pliocene deposits and one of the richest fossil records known from the Blancan North American Land Mammal Age, dating from about 3.07 million to at least 4 million years ago. It is especially important for the largest known concentration of Hagerman horse fossils and for remains from at least 200 species, including mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, turtles, and invertebrates. The historic Smithsonian Horse Quarry is central to its scientific importance. Research, expanded facilities, and partnerships continue to support study of its fossil localities, ancient landscapes, and public interpretation.
