In the 1949-1950 season, first-year coach C. Norris Simpson led the Miller City Wildcats boys’ basketball team, an undersized group of farm boys, to 29 straight victories, including 11 tournament wins. Playing home games in “The Barn,” heated by two pot-bellied stoves, the underdog team earned nicknames such as the “Mighty Mites” and “Cinderella Kids” because it regularly defeated bigger opponents. On March 25, 1950, the Wildcats beat the Eaton Eagles in the Class B state championship game and became the only one of more than 1,100 teams in Ohio to finish that season undefeated. Thousands of fans welcomed the state champions home to Miller City, then a village of about 150 residents.
