Near this place stood Camp Bartow, fortified by Confederates in 1861, and at Greenbrier Bridge an artillery duel was fought on Oct. 3, 1861. The Battle of Allegheny, fought 8 mi. east on Dec. 13, 1861, pitted the armies of Gen. W.L. Jackson and Gen. R.L. Milroy against each other. The area also became known as “Travelers’ Repose,” made famous in the novels of Hergesheimer, Bierce, and others, and as the country of “Tol’able David.” On the neighboring hills, Confederate trenches that guarded their camp in 1861 remained near the site of several battles.
