Belfry Mountain, in New York’s Adirondack region north-northwest of Witherbee, is best known for the fire observation station on its summit. The mountain’s first fire lookout was a wooden tower erected by the Conservation Commission in 1912. In 1917, it was replaced by a 47-foot Aermotor LS40 tower that became part of the Adirondack network of stations used to watch for forest fires. That tower remained in service until 1988 and was officially closed in early 1989 by the Department of Environmental Conservation.
