Allegiance is pledged to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. The United States Army, United States Marines, United States Navy, United States Air Force, and United States Coast Guard are honored. When a serviceman or woman is lost on the battlefield, surviving members of their squad customarily gather around a Battlefield Cross made from boots, rifle, and helmet to memorialize their fallen comrades. Recognition is also given to all K-9s and their handlers, whose deeds and sacrifices are remembered.
