Army Specialist Four Shelby M. Long served in the Vietnam War with 1 Cav. Div., C. Co. He was wounded when his VH-1 helicopter crashed during an extraction mission in Phuoc Long Province on Oct. 22, 1969, killing five and injuring Long and three others. He died from his injuries 12 days later at the 106" General Hospital in Japan at 20 years and 2 months of age. Raised in Harrison Township, Ohio, he was later honored by Southeastern High School with an honorary high school degree and a memorial stone on school property on May 31, 2015.
