After siege operations on the Atlanta front failed, Federal forces moved against the two railroads south of the city. Howard’s Army of the Tennessee, Thomas’ Army of the Cumberland, and Schofield’s Army of the Ohio struck the Atlanta and West Point Railroad at this point, and several miles of track were destroyed between East Point and Fairburn on Aug. 28 and 29. On Aug. 30, the movement east against the Macon Railroad began: Howard advanced from Shadnor Church by way of Bethsaida Church to Renfroe’s and Jonesboro, while Thomas and Schofield moved from Red Oak to Rough and Ready. This operation against the two railroads, together with the two days of battle at Jonesboro on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, ended the campaign.
