In Boonesborough, Kentucky, within Fort Boonesborough State Park, the Kentucky River Museum preserves the history of the Kentucky River in the former lock operator's home and the storage and maintenance building for Lock 10. Established in 2002, it occupies surviving working structures rather than a purpose-built gallery, giving the site a direct connection to the river's past. Lock 10 was one of fourteen locks built on the Kentucky River by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the river's navigation system. The museum also remains linked to a still-active river system, as the upper ten original locks, numbered 5 through 14, are now operated by the Kentucky River Authority.
