The Buckwheat Festival grounds are the site of the annual Buckwheat Festival, which first took place from October 13th through October 15, 1938. In the 1930's, after the Great Depression, buckwheat was one of farmers' most reliable crops, and the festival began as a way to bring farmers together. It has since evolved into an event with something for everybody. During the last Thursday through Sunday of every September, the grounds host games, rides, crafts, foods, and animal barns. Especially important to Preston County, the festival has become a major tradition, drawing 100,000 - 120,000 visitors each year to the grounds next to the Kingwood Fire Department. Its traditions include the King and Queen and Royalty Court, buckwheat cakes at the Community Building, and three parades: Firemen's, School Day, and Farmers' Day.
