This general store has been in continuous use since 1852 and was built of Volcano brick and native limestone. It was originally two stores, with the Sacramento on the left owned by Mandelbaum and Klauber and Charles Burleson’s store on the right. Burleson bought the Sacramento in 1861 and joined the two stores in the rear. Lucca Cassinelli and family owned the property from 1865 to 1956, after which it was sold to E. Poggio, and E. Laun has been the owner since 1971. It is also identified as the oldest continuously operated store in California since 1852, and another account says the two original stores were Sacrament on the left and Burleson’s on the right, purchased in the late 1860s by Luca Cassinelli for $1,700.00 in gold coins, with Cassinelli ownership lasting until 1956.
